The following are DNSBLs (and other anti-spam tools) that we recommend. Being listed on this page does not necessarily mean that we use the particular DNSBL (or tool) in our own filtering. Also, some of these are better for scoring while others are appropriate for blocking. At this time, minimal commentary will be presented, but that may change in the near future. Also, please visit each web site to gain a full understanding of the licensing requirements for each of these. At various usage levels, some of these are not free or have particular requirements.
CBL - The most effective and prolific data feed into Spamhaus Zen list. If you already use Zen, then it is best to not query CBL since Zen already includes CBL. But CBL is available as a stand-alone DNSBL.
backscatterer.org - NOT to be used for either blocking or scoring... unlessother attributes of the message indicate that the message might be backscatter.

Decisions, Decisions!
Mostly, this page describes DNSBLs and tools that a spam filtering solution provider might add to their product, or that an end user of such a product might add to their own implementation of that product. Therefore, the items on this page are not complete spam filtering solutions. Instead, they are add-ons which make spam filtering software, hardware, and/or hosted solutions better.
More comprehensive end-to-end solutions include the following:
An anti-spam appliance (hardware)
installing anti-spam software
hosting your e-mail with a hoster that has a good spam filtering system in place (whatever that might be)
using an MX Gateway spam filtering service where the spam goes to another network first and then, after spam filtering is applied, the legitimate mail is immediately forwarded on to your mail server.
